Prospective Undergraduate Researchers
Spring Semester and Summer: Recruitment has closed for spring/summer 2026.
Our lab usually recruits 12-15 undergraduate research assistants during the spring semester for frog research to take place during the breeding season, which depends on the frog species and the weather, but usually occurs between about April 15 and August 15. Undergraduate research assistants typically do some combination of all of the following tasks
Fall Semester: During the fall semester, opportunities may be available to run experiments and conduct field work on acoustically communicating insects, including tree crickets and field crickets. Some opportunities may also exist for laboratory work, including experiments and animal husbandry.

Prospective Graduate Students
The Tanner Lab can accept PhD students through both the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience. We do not typically recruit master's students.
We are currently recruiting graduate students only through Psychology & Neuroscience (exceptions can be made for students with external fellowships). If you're a prospective PhD student interested in joining the lab, please send a description of your research interests and experience and a copy of your CV and/or undergraduate transcript to tanner at utk.edu.

Prospective Postdocs
We may soon be recruiting postdocs, and we are always happy to consider supporting fellowship applications to fund a prospective postdoc. If you're a prospective postdoc interested in joining the lab, please send a description of your research interests and experience and a copy of your CV to tanner at utk.edu.
